He was ordained Bishop in 1965, he is the current Metropolitan of Minsk and Slutsk, and since 1989 Patriarchal Exarch of all Belarus. He is one of the major representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church and of the entire Orthodox world. Between 1981 and 1989 he has served as Chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate department for external church relations. He is currently the chairman of the Synodal Biblical-Theological Commission. Author of numerous publications, since many decennia he is a protagonist of the ecumenical dialogue in Europe and the World.
