Archbishop of Bologna since 2015, he has been President of the Italian Bishops' Conference since 24 May 2022. He was a parish priest in Rome, first in Trastevere and then in the eastern suburbs of the city. In 2012 he became auxiliary bishop of Rome. Since 2000 he has been ecclesiastical assistant of the Community of Sant'Egidio. In 2019 he was created cardinal by Pope Francis with the title of the Church of Sant'Egidio.
He is the author of studies and spiritual reflections on the challenges of our time.

His name is linked to the commitment of the Community of Sant'Egidio to peace, especially in Africa and Latin America.

Last May he was commissioned by Pope Francis to lead a mission to help ease tensions in the conflict in Ukraine.
