A leading politician of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), she served as Minister of Education and Research in the government led by Angela Merkel from 2005 to 2013.
She was Germany's Ambassador to the Holy See (2014-2018) and from 2018 briefly took up the post of Ambassador for Germany to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
