He is President of the Pontifical Academy for Life and Grand Chancellor of the John Paul II Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family. From 2012 to 2016 he presided over the Pontifical Council for the Family. He is a member of the Dicastery for Evangelization and the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.

In 2020, the Italian Minister of Health appointed him President of the Commission for the Reform of Health and Social Care for the Elderly Population.

He is spiritual advisor of the Community of Sant'Egidio, whose life he has followed since the early 1970s. He has long pastoral experience and is the author of numerous volumes on spirituality and Church history.

For his commitment to peace and dialogue he has received prestigious international prizes and awards.

He was postulator of the cause for the canonisation of Bishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero.
