As a historian, he has devoted himself mainly to the study of the Second Vatican Council. He is currently full professor of History of Christianity at the University of Modena-Reggio Emilia and holder of the UNESCO chair on religious pluralism and peace at the University of Bologna. He directs the John XXIII Foundation for Religious Sciences in Bologna. He edits columns and in-depth dossiers for RAI and other Italian and international media.
