His long diplomatic career began in 1985, with his first assignments in Tehran, New York and Tirana. In 2004 he was appointed Ambassador of Italy to Kabul.

 
In 2010 he served in the European Union as special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. From 2011 to 2013 he was Head of the European Union Delegation in Albania.
 
In 2015 he was appointed Ambassador of Italy to Beijing.
 
In September 2019 he returned to the Farnesina as Head of Cabinet of Minister Di Maio. Since 2021 he has been Secretary General of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
