International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions: "Living together in a time of crisis. Family of peoples, family of God".


Embracing the historical legacy left by the Prayer of Assisi 1986, promoted by John Paul II, the Community of Sant'Egidio has been organising a pilgrimage of dialogue and peace in the last 25 years in a number of European and Mediterranean cities.



Both Christian Churches and the other widespread religions, as well as cultural and civil society representatives gathered in the "Spirit of Assisi". More than in one occasion the meeting was the starting point for peace keeping processes in several areas all over the world.



The International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions in the Spirit of Assisi will be hosted in Barcelona next 3rd-5th October, promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Archdiocese of Barcelona.



The current obscure time of economic crises and regional conflicts giving uncertainty and fear, religions question themselves in order to build a dialogue carrying new spiritual energies to be offered to world lacking visions therefore hope for the future.



Several Archbishops will take part to the Meeting such as Sistach, Turksin, Sepe, Ricard, Maiella Agnelo among the others, and relevant are the ecumenical delegations, The Patriarchate of Moscow, the Ecumenical Council of Churches, the Lutheran Global Federation and the Global Methodist Council, among the others.



Muslim and Jewish delegations from 16 countries and the major Asian religions representatives complete the parterre.



Lay cultural and political delegates from Latin America, Europe and Africa will be joining the dialogue to find new solutions and resolutions to enter a path leaving the global economic crises and the fighting against terrorism behind.

International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions: "Living together in a time of crisis. Family of peoples, family of God".


Embracing the historical legacy left by the Prayer of Assisi 1986, promoted by John Paul II, the Community of Sant'Egidio has been organising a pilgrimage of dialogue and peace in the last 25 years in a number of European and Mediterranean cities.



Both Christian Churches and the other widespread religions, as well as cultural and civil society representatives gathered in the "Spirit of Assisi". More than in one occasion the meeting was the starting point for peace keeping processes in several areas all over the world.



The International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions in the Spirit of Assisi will be hosted in Barcelona next 3rd-5th October, promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Archdiocese of Barcelona.



The current obscure time of economic crises and regional conflicts giving uncertainty and fear, religions question themselves in order to build a dialogue carrying new spiritual energies to be offered to world lacking visions therefore hope for the future.



Several Archbishops will take part to the Meeting such as Sistach, Turksin, Sepe, Ricard, Maiella Agnelo among the others, and relevant are the ecumenical delegations, The Patriarchate of Moscow, the Ecumenical Council of Churches, the Lutheran Global Federation and the Global Methodist Council, among the others.



Muslim and Jewish delegations from 16 countries and the major Asian religions representatives complete the parterre.



Lay cultural and political delegates from Latin America, Europe and Africa will be joining the dialogue to find new solutions and resolutions to enter a path leaving the global economic crises and the fighting against terrorism behind.

International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions: "Living together in a time of crisis. Family of peoples, family of God".


Embracing the historical legacy left by the Prayer of Assisi 1986, promoted by John Paul II, the Community of Sant'Egidio has been organising a pilgrimage of dialogue and peace in the last 25 years in a number of European and Mediterranean cities.



Both Christian Churches and the other widespread religions, as well as cultural and civil society representatives gathered in the "Spirit of Assisi". More than in one occasion the meeting was the starting point for peace keeping processes in several areas all over the world.



The International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions in the Spirit of Assisi will be hosted in Barcelona next 3rd-5th October, promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Archdiocese of Barcelona.



The current obscure time of economic crises and regional conflicts giving uncertainty and fear, religions question themselves in order to build a dialogue carrying new spiritual energies to be offered to world lacking visions therefore hope for the future.



Several Archbishops will take part to the Meeting such as Sistach, Turksin, Sepe, Ricard, Maiella Agnelo among the others, and relevant are the ecumenical delegations, The Patriarchate of Moscow, the Ecumenical Council of Churches, the Lutheran Global Federation and the Global Methodist Council, among the others.



Muslim and Jewish delegations from 16 countries and the major Asian religions representatives complete the parterre.



Lay cultural and political delegates from Latin America, Europe and Africa will be joining the dialogue to find new solutions and resolutions to enter a path leaving the global economic crises and the fighting against terrorism behind.

International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions: "Living together in a time of crisis. Family of peoples, family of God".


Embracing the historical legacy left by the Prayer of Assisi 1986, promoted by John Paul II, the Community of Sant'Egidio has been organising a pilgrimage of dialogue and peace in the last 25 years in a number of European and Mediterranean cities.



Both Christian Churches and the other widespread religions, as well as cultural and civil society representatives gathered in the "Spirit of Assisi". More than in one occasion the meeting was the starting point for peace keeping processes in several areas all over the world.



The International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions in the Spirit of Assisi will be hosted in Barcelona next 3rd-5th October, promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Archdiocese of Barcelona.



The current obscure time of economic crises and regional conflicts giving uncertainty and fear, religions question themselves in order to build a dialogue carrying new spiritual energies to be offered to world lacking visions therefore hope for the future.



Several Archbishops will take part to the Meeting such as Sistach, Turksin, Sepe, Ricard, Maiella Agnelo among the others, and relevant are the ecumenical delegations, The Patriarchate of Moscow, the Ecumenical Council of Churches, the Lutheran Global Federation and the Global Methodist Council, among the others.



Muslim and Jewish delegations from 16 countries and the major Asian religions representatives complete the parterre.



Lay cultural and political delegates from Latin America, Europe and Africa will be joining the dialogue to find new solutions and resolutions to enter a path leaving the global economic crises and the fighting against terrorism behind.

International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions: "Living together in a time of crisis. Family of peoples, family of God".


Embracing the historical legacy left by the Prayer of Assisi 1986, promoted by John Paul II, the Community of Sant'Egidio has been organising a pilgrimage of dialogue and peace in the last 25 years in a number of European and Mediterranean cities.



Both Christian Churches and the other widespread religions, as well as cultural and civil society representatives gathered in the "Spirit of Assisi". More than in one occasion the meeting was the starting point for peace keeping processes in several areas all over the world.



The International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions in the Spirit of Assisi will be hosted in Barcelona next 3rd-5th October, promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Archdiocese of Barcelona.



The current obscure time of economic crises and regional conflicts giving uncertainty and fear, religions question themselves in order to build a dialogue carrying new spiritual energies to be offered to world lacking visions therefore hope for the future.



Several Archbishops will take part to the Meeting such as Sistach, Turksin, Sepe, Ricard, Maiella Agnelo among the others, and relevant are the ecumenical delegations, The Patriarchate of Moscow, the Ecumenical Council of Churches, the Lutheran Global Federation and the Global Methodist Council, among the others.



Muslim and Jewish delegations from 16 countries and the major Asian religions representatives complete the parterre.



Lay cultural and political delegates from Latin America, Europe and Africa will be joining the dialogue to find new solutions and resolutions to enter a path leaving the global economic crises and the fighting against terrorism behind.

International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions: "Living together in a time of crisis. Family of peoples, family of God".


Embracing the historical legacy left by the Prayer of Assisi 1986, promoted by John Paul II, the Community of Sant'Egidio has been organising a pilgrimage of dialogue and peace in the last 25 years in a number of European and Mediterranean cities.



Both Christian Churches and the other widespread religions, as well as cultural and civil society representatives gathered in the "Spirit of Assisi". More than in one occasion the meeting was the starting point for peace keeping processes in several areas all over the world.



The International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions in the Spirit of Assisi will be hosted in Barcelona next 3rd-5th October, promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Archdiocese of Barcelona.



The current obscure time of economic crises and regional conflicts giving uncertainty and fear, religions question themselves in order to build a dialogue carrying new spiritual energies to be offered to world lacking visions therefore hope for the future.



Several Archbishops will take part to the Meeting such as Sistach, Turksin, Sepe, Ricard, Maiella Agnelo among the others, and relevant are the ecumenical delegations, The Patriarchate of Moscow, the Ecumenical Council of Churches, the Lutheran Global Federation and the Global Methodist Council, among the others.



Muslim and Jewish delegations from 16 countries and the major Asian religions representatives complete the parterre.



Lay cultural and political delegates from Latin America, Europe and Africa will be joining the dialogue to find new solutions and resolutions to enter a path leaving the global economic crises and the fighting against terrorism behind.

International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions: "Living together in a time of crisis. Family of peoples, family of God".


Embracing the historical legacy left by the Prayer of Assisi 1986, promoted by John Paul II, the Community of Sant'Egidio has been organising a pilgrimage of dialogue and peace in the last 25 years in a number of European and Mediterranean cities.



Both Christian Churches and the other widespread religions, as well as cultural and civil society representatives gathered in the "Spirit of Assisi". More than in one occasion the meeting was the starting point for peace keeping processes in several areas all over the world.



The International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions in the Spirit of Assisi will be hosted in Barcelona next 3rd-5th October, promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Archdiocese of Barcelona.



The current obscure time of economic crises and regional conflicts giving uncertainty and fear, religions question themselves in order to build a dialogue carrying new spiritual energies to be offered to world lacking visions therefore hope for the future.



Several Archbishops will take part to the Meeting such as Sistach, Turksin, Sepe, Ricard, Maiella Agnelo among the others, and relevant are the ecumenical delegations, The Patriarchate of Moscow, the Ecumenical Council of Churches, the Lutheran Global Federation and the Global Methodist Council, among the others.



Muslim and Jewish delegations from 16 countries and the major Asian religions representatives complete the parterre.



Lay cultural and political delegates from Latin America, Europe and Africa will be joining the dialogue to find new solutions and resolutions to enter a path leaving the global economic crises and the fighting against terrorism behind.

International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions: "Living together in a time of crisis. Family of peoples, family of God".


Embracing the historical legacy left by the Prayer of Assisi 1986, promoted by John Paul II, the Community of Sant'Egidio has been organising a pilgrimage of dialogue and peace in the last 25 years in a number of European and Mediterranean cities.



Both Christian Churches and the other widespread religions, as well as cultural and civil society representatives gathered in the "Spirit of Assisi". More than in one occasion the meeting was the starting point for peace keeping processes in several areas all over the world.



The International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions in the Spirit of Assisi will be hosted in Barcelona next 3rd-5th October, promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Archdiocese of Barcelona.



The current obscure time of economic crises and regional conflicts giving uncertainty and fear, religions question themselves in order to build a dialogue carrying new spiritual energies to be offered to world lacking visions therefore hope for the future.



Several Archbishops will take part to the Meeting such as Sistach, Turksin, Sepe, Ricard, Maiella Agnelo among the others, and relevant are the ecumenical delegations, The Patriarchate of Moscow, the Ecumenical Council of Churches, the Lutheran Global Federation and the Global Methodist Council, among the others.



Muslim and Jewish delegations from 16 countries and the major Asian religions representatives complete the parterre.



Lay cultural and political delegates from Latin America, Europe and Africa will be joining the dialogue to find new solutions and resolutions to enter a path leaving the global economic crises and the fighting against terrorism behind.

International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions: "Living together in a time of crisis. Family of peoples, family of God".


Embracing the historical legacy left by the Prayer of Assisi 1986, promoted by John Paul II, the Community of Sant'Egidio has been organising a pilgrimage of dialogue and peace in the last 25 years in a number of European and Mediterranean cities.



Both Christian Churches and the other widespread religions, as well as cultural and civil society representatives gathered in the "Spirit of Assisi". More than in one occasion the meeting was the starting point for peace keeping processes in several areas all over the world.



The International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions in the Spirit of Assisi will be hosted in Barcelona next 3rd-5th October, promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Archdiocese of Barcelona.



The current obscure time of economic crises and regional conflicts giving uncertainty and fear, religions question themselves in order to build a dialogue carrying new spiritual energies to be offered to world lacking visions therefore hope for the future.



Several Archbishops will take part to the Meeting such as Sistach, Turksin, Sepe, Ricard, Maiella Agnelo among the others, and relevant are the ecumenical delegations, The Patriarchate of Moscow, the Ecumenical Council of Churches, the Lutheran Global Federation and the Global Methodist Council, among the others.



Muslim and Jewish delegations from 16 countries and the major Asian religions representatives complete the parterre.



Lay cultural and political delegates from Latin America, Europe and Africa will be joining the dialogue to find new solutions and resolutions to enter a path leaving the global economic crises and the fighting against terrorism behind.

International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions: "Living together in a time of crisis. Family of peoples, family of God".


Embracing the historical legacy left by the Prayer of Assisi 1986, promoted by John Paul II, the Community of Sant'Egidio has been organising a pilgrimage of dialogue and peace in the last 25 years in a number of European and Mediterranean cities.



Both Christian Churches and the other widespread religions, as well as cultural and civil society representatives gathered in the "Spirit of Assisi". More than in one occasion the meeting was the starting point for peace keeping processes in several areas all over the world.



The International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions in the Spirit of Assisi will be hosted in Barcelona next 3rd-5th October, promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Archdiocese of Barcelona.



The current obscure time of economic crises and regional conflicts giving uncertainty and fear, religions question themselves in order to build a dialogue carrying new spiritual energies to be offered to world lacking visions therefore hope for the future.



Several Archbishops will take part to the Meeting such as Sistach, Turksin, Sepe, Ricard, Maiella Agnelo among the others, and relevant are the ecumenical delegations, The Patriarchate of Moscow, the Ecumenical Council of Churches, the Lutheran Global Federation and the Global Methodist Council, among the others.



Muslim and Jewish delegations from 16 countries and the major Asian religions representatives complete the parterre.



Lay cultural and political delegates from Latin America, Europe and Africa will be joining the dialogue to find new solutions and resolutions to enter a path leaving the global economic crises and the fighting against terrorism behind.

International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions: "Living together in a time of crisis. Family of peoples, family of God".


Embracing the historical legacy left by the Prayer of Assisi 1986, promoted by John Paul II, the Community of Sant'Egidio has been organising a pilgrimage of dialogue and peace in the last 25 years in a number of European and Mediterranean cities.



Both Christian Churches and the other widespread religions, as well as cultural and civil society representatives gathered in the "Spirit of Assisi". More than in one occasion the meeting was the starting point for peace keeping processes in several areas all over the world.



The International Meeting of Prayer for Peace of the Worldwide Religions in the Spirit of Assisi will be hosted in Barcelona next 3rd-5th October, promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Archdiocese of Barcelona.



The current obscure time of economic crises and regional conflicts giving uncertainty and fear, religions question themselves in order to build a dialogue carrying new spiritual energies to be offered to world lacking visions therefore hope for the future.



Several Archbishops will take part to the Meeting such as Sistach, Turksin, Sepe, Ricard, Maiella Agnelo among the others, and relevant are the ecumenical delegations, The Patriarchate of Moscow, the Ecumenical Council of Churches, the Lutheran Global Federation and the Global Methodist Council, among the others.



Muslim and Jewish delegations from 16 countries and the major Asian religions representatives complete the parterre.



Lay cultural and political delegates from Latin America, Europe and Africa will be joining the dialogue to find new solutions and resolutions to enter a path leaving the global economic crises and the fighting against terrorism behind.

Sono Tamara Chikunova, ho vissuto e lavorato in Uzbekistan. Per più di 9 anni ho lavorato per l’abolizione della pena di morte in questo paese.
Sono giunta sulla via dell’abolizione della pena di morte attraverso terribili prove.
Il 10 luglio 2000 in Uzbekistan, a Tashkent, è stato ucciso in applicazione di una condanna a morte il mio unico figlio Dmitri Chikunov.
Lui è stato condannato illegalmente e ucciso velocemente 7 mesi dopo la sentenza.
Come continuare a vivere? E’ una tragedia terribile, mi è difficile esprimere a parole quell’orrore e tutti quei sentimenti, allorché mi sono trovata davanti al fatto dell’uccisione del mio unico figlio e non solo della sua uccisione, ma della sua condanna a morte.
Vi voglio dire che in Uzbekistan in quel tempo, secondo la legge, i condannati a morte e i loro parenti non avevano diritto di conoscere la data dell’esecuzione della condanna  a morte.
Non avevano la possibilità di incontrare per l’ultima volta i propri cari prima della fucilazione.
E finora nessuno ha diritto di sapere dove è il luogo della sepoltura dei condannati a morte.
Così, a seguito della morte del mio unico figlio, ho intrapreso la lotta per l’abolizione di questo terribile e violento crimine di stato, compiuto in nome della giustizia.
Molti riflettono sul fatto se bisogna abolire oppure mantenere la pena di morte come punizione estrema.
Ma nessuno e in nessun luogo dirà mai in nome di cosa questa si applica.
Io penso che non sia in nome della vita!
Questa è contro la vita! Quando noi infliggiamo una sentenza, applichiamo la condanna a morte, dimentichiamo che la vita è un dono inestimabile che ci è stato dato dal Dio Altissimo! E i giudici, la società, lo stato non hanno diritto di decidere chi debba vivere e chi debba morire.
Insomma il boia è sempre molto peggio di colui che ha commesso il delitto.
La pena di morte è una forma di omicidio di stato.
L’abolizione della pena di morte è parte di quel complesso di valori che unisce in sé i diritti umani, la democrazia e lo stato di diritto.
Quando lo stato priva un uomo della vita, allora fa capire che esistono determinate situazioni in cui l’omicidio può essere annesso e previsto dalla legge.
Chi ha diritto di dire quali sono queste situazioni?
Se è permesso uccidere criminali violenti, allora potrebbe essere ammessa anche l’uccisione di oppositori politici, di rappresentanti di minoranze, dei più poveri, o di altre figure che possano sembrare riconducibili a simili situazioni.
Questa logica appare inammissibile in una società democratica, che difende i diritti e le libertà di tutti gli uomini.
E’ fuori discussione il fatto che la violenza genera altra violenza.
Erroneamente si ritiene che la pena di morte possa fungere da deterrente per i reati violenti, ed è considerata quale mezzo di applicazione della giustizia.
Le discussioni intorno all’abolizione della pena di morte riflettono lo stato della società in cui viviamo e il discorso sulla pena di morte non si può semplificare. Il fatto che si compiano delitti efferati non deve essere sfruttato dai politici nella loro retorica populista con appelli all’irrigidimento della lotta al crimine, che in sostanza, non favorisce una corretta discussione del problema.
 
Adesso è il tempo in cui lottare per l’anima delle persone. Altrimenti il vuoto spirituale si riempie velocemente di altre idée.
Queste idee sono espresse chiaramente nel nazionalismo e nel terrorismo, per i quali non esistono confini di stato, né mancanza di mezzi finanziari per il raggiungimento dei loro scopi.
Troppi governi ritengono che possano risolvere difficili problemi sociali o politici, mediante la condanna a morte di alcuni o addirittura di centinaia di prigionieri.
Troppi uomini in gran parte dei paesi del mondo non sono consapevoli del fatto che la pena di morte non difende la società, ma la inasprisce.
La pena di morte può essere conseguenza di un errore giudiziario, che, a differenza di qualsiasi altra pena, non potrà mai essere corretto. Esisterà sempre il rischio di uccidere persone innocenti.
I funzionari responsabili della lotta al terrorismo e ai crimini politici hanno dichiarato che la pena di morte, sia aumenta il numero di tali atti delittuosi, sia li diminuisce e la veridicità di entrambe le teorie è la stessa.
I terroristi condannati a morte possono diventare martiri, la cui memoria ispira le organizzazioni terroristiche. La prospettiva della condanna a morte difficilmente fermerà i terroristi, uomini e donne, pronti a sacrificare la loro vita in nome delle loro convinzioni, come per esempio i terroristi kamikaze, anzi può anche ispirare l’emulazione.
Inoltre, l’applicazione da parte di uno stato della pena di morte può essere usata da gruppi armati dell’opposizione come giustificazione per compiere azioni corrispondenti che contribuiscono a perpetuare il ciclo della violenza.
Finché un prigioniero resta in vita, può sperare nella riabilitazione o nella sua liberazione, nella possibilità che successivamente venga dimostrata la sua innocenza.
La condanna a morte rende impossibile sia la riabilitazione che il riconoscimento di errori giudiziari.
La pena di morte rappresenta una misura di pena unica, e i condannati si trovano in condizioni diverse dagli altri prigionieri; queste condizioni sono in sostanza la crudeltà della condanna in sé, e la crudeltà dell’attesa dell’esecuzione che spesso si protrae per molti anni nel braccio della morte e il pensiero dell’esecuzione è un continuo tormento per il condannato.
Le religioni, nei loro insegnamenti si fondano sulla misericordia, sulla compassione e sul perdono.
L’appello all’interruzione di tutte le esecuzioni si basa su questi insegnamenti.
E’ necessario che la società sia pienamente informata su quello che è in realtà la pena di morte e su come viene applicata; allora probabilmente, molti saranno pronti a sostenere la sua abolizione.
E ancora c’è un argomento incontestabile:
Chi fra i condannati è capace di sopportare un verdetto sulla propria vita definitivo e immutabile?
Giordano Bruno diceva:
«Il giudizio su di me sarà corretto laddove la giustizia non è nella tirannia, e il giudizio non è nella violenza»
Noi viviamo in un tempo in cui i crimini degli stati superano a volte i limiti delle capacità e delle possibilità dei singoli criminali...
La paura devastante e umiliante a cui per mesi e anni è sottoposto il condannato e alla quale non è stata sottoposta la vittima è una punizione ancora più tremenda della morte stessa.
Dal diario di Eduard Akhmetshin condannato ucciso nel 2003:
«Osservando e penetrando nell’animo di ogni condannato a morte, si vorrebbe trovare o cogliere qualcosa, quali sentimenti più di altri lo occupano: che cosa egli prova? A cosa pensa quando ogni giorno vede allontanarsi la sua vita? Tutti vorrebbero saperlo. Ma sfortunatamente, almeno a me così sembra, questi sentimenti restano misteriosamente nascosti nelle profondità dell’animo umano, dietro la paura, dietro lo sgomento e dietro lo smarrimento e la confusione. Questa è la terribile tortura di aspettare ogni giorno la morte».
Persino da questi esempi è evidente come sia complessa e intricata la questione sull’ammissibilità della pena di morte.
L’abolizione della pena di morte rappresenta l’essenza della democrazia.
Nei paesi dell’Asia centrale attualmente la pena di morte:
Nel Turkmenistan è stata abolita nel 1996;
In Kazakistan il 20 luglio del 2009 (eccetto che per terrorismo);
Nel Tagikistan c’è una moratoria dal giugno 2004;
Nel Kirghizistan l’ex Presidente Bakiev ha firmato l’abolizione il 25 giugno 2007;
In Mongolia dal gennaio 2010 il presidente, usando il suo potere di concedere la grazia, ha commutato tutte le condanne a morte a 30 anni di reclusione. E’ un atto di grande umanità e misericordia. La Mongolia si trova sulla strada di una piena abolizione della pena di morte come punizione estrema.
Insomma, la cancellazione della pena di morte negli stati dell’Asia centrale è uno dei risultati più importanti conseguiti nell’ambito della difesa dei diritti umani e delle sue libertà.
Si deve sottolineare soprattutto l’enorme contributo della comunità di Sant’Egidio al lavoro per l’abolizione della pena di morte negli stati dell’Asia Centrale.
Potrei dire molto sui sentimenti e le emozioni che ho vissuto dopo la morte di mio figlio. Ma, grazie a Dio, sono stata condotta sulla strada della comunità di Sant’Egidio, una comunità che non solo ha condiviso il calore del suo cuore con il mio, ma mi ha insegnato la possibilità del dialogo con il governo che non aveva ascoltato i miei appelli per cancellare la pena di morte, per contrastare il problema e risolverlo. Voglio dire che per più di 8 anni abbiamo lavorato per l’eliminazione della pena di morte in Uzbekistan.
Durante questo lungo periodo, siamo riusciti a cancellare le condanne a morte di 23 giovani a cui è stata ridonata la vita. Fra questi alcuni sono stati già liberati.
Ma ci sono stati momenti in cui non abbiamo fatto in tempo a fermare l’esecuzione della condanna e 22 persone, fra cui mio figlio, sono stati uccisi.
Sono felice di dire che il 1 gennaio 2008 in Uzbekistan è stata pienamente abolita la pena di morte.
Nessuno più sarà ucciso per legge dallo stato.
Inoltre, vorrei dire, molto è stato fatto da parte della comunità. Non solo ha sostenuto me, mentre vivevo in Uzbekistan e l’organizzazione che presiedevo, e ha difeso la sicurezza della mia vita e ha seguito le vicende  legate alla cancellazione della pena di morte nel mio paese.
E’ stata mobilitata la comunità internazionale, che si è appellata al governo dell’Uzbekistan affinché abolisse la pena di morte. 
E’ stato svolto un lavoro di educazione nei confronti della società civile. Abbiamo condotto molte iniziative insieme, appellandoci al governo.
Nel momento dell’abolizione nel braccio della morte c’erano 57 persone.
Vorrei condividere con voi la grande gioia del fatto che gran parte delle sentenze di morte sono state riesaminate. A molti la pena è stata ridotta a 25 anni, pochi sono stati condannati all’ergastolo.
Sono felice oggi di dirvi questo, il lungo cammino verso la cancellazione della pena di morte in Uzbekistan compiuto insieme alla comunità di Sant’Egidio ha portato a questa bella vittoria finale.
La vita ha sconfitto la morte ed ora noi non ci siamo fermati a questo traguardo, poiché c’è ancora molto lavoro da fare sulle condizioni di vita nelle carceri dove sono reclusi gli ergastolani. Non dobbiamo dimenticare i prigionieri, che in genere sono persone semplici come noi, alle quali non può essere tolto il diritto alla dignità.
Qui parlando davanti a voi, vorrei sottolineare che il diritto più grande che ogni persona possiede fin dalla nascita, è il diritto alla vita e nessuno può esserne privato se non da Dio.
«La giustizia non potrà mai essere conseguita attraverso la privazione della vita, la moralità non potrà mai essere affermata con la legalizzazione dell’omicidio». (Koretta Skott King)
«Ti voglio bene mia cara mammina; se riceverai questa lettera, ti prego di avere cura di te. Questa gente è capace di tutto!! Ti chiedo perdono se non ci dovessimo vedere durante il processo, ricordati che sono innocente, che non ho versato il sangue di nessuno!
Preferisco morire ma non permetterò che alcuno ti faccia del male. Ti voglio tanto bene, tu sei l’unica persona a me cara. Ti prego, ricordati di me. Ti abbraccio forte. Tuo figlio Dimitri».
