President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, he served as President of the Pontifical Academy for Life. He is the ecclesiastical assistant of the Community of Sant’Egidio, whose experience he has been following since the 1970s. He has a long pastoral experience and is the author of many studies and articles on spirituality and the history of the Church.
He received renowned international prizes and awards for his commitment for peace and dialogue. He was the postulator of the cause of beatification of the Archbishop of San Salvador, Oscar Arnulfo Romero.
