He is President of the Pontifical Academy for Life and Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for the Sciences of Marriage and the Family.

In these forums he has also addressed ethical issues in the field of artificial intelligence. He is responsible for the publication in January 2023 of the important document 'Al Ethics: An Abramic committent to the Rome Call' signed in the Vatican by representatives of the three Abrahamic religions.

He is a member of the Dicastery for Evangelisation and the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.

He was postulator of the cause for canonisation of Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero.

Since its establishment in 2020, he has chaired the Italian Commission for the reform of health and social care for the elderly population, which coordinates the activities of the Ministry of Health with particular reference to home care.

He is spiritual advisor of the Community of Sant'Egidio, whose life he has been following since the early 1970s.

He has long pastoral experience and is the author of numerous volumes on spirituality and Church history.

For his commitment to peace and dialogue he has received prestigious international prizes and awards.
