He is President of the Indonesian Center for Dialogue and Cooperation between Civilizations. He was the Indonesian President's Special Envoy for dialogue between religions.

Professor of Islamic Political Science in Jakarta, he was President of Muhammadiyah, the second largest Indonesian Islamic organization with 29 million members. He chaired the Council of Indonesian Ulema and was President of the Asian Conference on Religion and Peace (ACRP).
